Q I am in my late 20s and would like to become an air traffic controller. Can you tell me where I can find out more information and possible contacts?

A Usually, the basic educational requirement is year 12. The trainers are Airservices Australia and the Royal Australian Air Force. They are both the training bodies and employers of air traffic controllers in Australia. The selection process includes aptitude tests, interviews, police checks and medical examinations, followed by classroom and on-the-job training before a licence is granted. This is a very competitive area, but once qualified you can find work throughout Australia. For details contact Air Traffic Control Recruitment, Airservices Australia airservices

Q I am planning to send some unsolicited direct-contact letters to possible employers. I have my resume in order but I am not too sure what I should write in a covering letter or how long that letter should be. Do you have any advice?

A Keep your covering letter to a page. Your resume will say more about you. The letter should introduce you, say why you are writing and conclude by expressing keenness to provide more information at an interview. Don't be afraid to make your letter unique, personal, friendly and even a little challenging. A good covering letter and resume are not unlike a good business card designed to catch the reader's attention.
